About us

Hi, I’m Carmine Tuosto, and I’m the founder of Gafas for Good. My mission is simple: I want to help people see the world clearly—literally and figuratively. Through Gafas for Good, we’re transforming lives by providing access to eyewear for those who can’t afford it. "Gafas" means "eyewear" in Spanish, and for me, it's more than just glasses—it's about offering clarity, hope, and opportunity to those in need.

Our mission

It all started with a deep desire to make a difference. Over time, I’ve been able to collect unused eyewear through partnerships with optical stores and generous supporters. Already, we’ve impacted the lives of over 100 individuals in Zapua, Ahuachapan, El Salvador, providing them with the glasses they need to see clearly. It’s been humbling to watch something as simple as a pair of glasses completely change someone’s life, whether it's a child seeing the board at school for the first time or an adult being able to work more efficiently. I’m proud to say that Gafas for Good is now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and we’re ready to grow. Our journey is just getting started, and I’m excited for the road ahead. Meet the Visionaries Behind Gafas for Good

Our passionate team of founders is dedicated to making a lasting impact through accessible eyewear and eye care. Their collective experience, expertise, and heart drive the mission of Gafas for Good, ensuring that everyone has access to the vision care they deserve.

Leila Alfonso Savinovich

Leila was born to Cuban immigrant parents and raised in Essex County, New Jersey. In 1998, she began her journey in the eyewear industry, starting a summer job at an optical store. Over the past 26 years, she has gained extensive experience in various roles, from optical retail to ophthalmic assistant, to working in luxury optical wholesale, and even designing her own eyewear line. Leila co-founded Gafas for Good in 2016 with her son Carmine, driven by a passion to provide eyewear and eye care to those without access to them.

Carmine Alfonso Tuosto

Diagnosed with severe amblyopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism at just 9 months old, Carmine began wearing high-prescription glasses from a young age. His early detection and treatment were guided by his mother Leila’s knowledge and experience in ophthalmology. Inspired by his journey, Carmine began helping his mother collect and donate eyeglasses to various charities. In 2022, he decided to formalize and expand Gafas for Good, turning it into an organization dedicated to giving back and educating high schoolers about the importance of purposeful community service.

Myra Alfonso Marte

With nearly two decades of experience in the fashion industry, Myra is currently an operations manager for an eyewear wholesale company. Like Carmine, she has worn glasses from an early age and is passionate about raising awareness of early detection for childhood eye conditions. At Gafas for Good, Myra plays a crucial role by managing resources and leveraging her connections with large eyewear suppliers to support the organization’s donation efforts.

Who can donate glasses to your organization?

Anyone can donate glasses! We welcome donations from individuals, optical stores, businesses, and other organizations.

What types of glasses do you accept?

We accept prescription glasses, reading glasses, sunglasses, and frames, as long as they are in good condition.

How do I donate my glasses?

It’s easy to donate! You can mail your glasses directly to our provided address.

Are there any specific requirements for donated glasses?

We prefer glasses in good condition without major damage. While minor scratches are okay, we cannot accept severely damaged glasses.

What happens to the glasses after donation?

Once donated, the glasses are cleaned, sorted, and distributed to those in need. We work with various organizations to ensure the glasses reach those who need them the most.

Can I get a tax deduction for donating glasses?

Yes, we provide tax receipts for all donated glasses. Please consult your tax advisor for details on deductions.

Do you accept donations internationally?
